TAMPA, Fla. - Billy Crystal’s "mahvelous" time with the New York Yankees is over.

The team released the actor on his 60th birthday, one day after he struck out in his only at-bat against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The announcement came at the bottom of the second page in Friday’s game notes. Under transactions, it said "March 14 Released INF Billy Crystal."

The team gave Crystal, a longtime Yankees’ fan, the opportunity to be the designated hitter and lead off the first inning Thursday because of his ambassador-like role for baseball.

WINNIPEG - B.C.’s Bob Ursel, who was all but written off after a slow start early in the week, defeated Olympic gold medallist Brad Gushue of Newfoundland & Labrador 8-6 in a tie-breaker Friday morning at the Tim Hortons Brier.

Ursel will face defending champion Glenn Howard of Ontario Friday afternoon in the three-versus-four game. Alberta’s Kevin Martin will play Saskatchewan’s Pat Simmons in the one-versus-two game Friday evening.

Ursel and Gushue finished the round-robin with 7-4 records.

B.C. got off to a quick start in the tie-breaker, stealing three points in the first end after Gushue was heavy on a last-rock draw.

Clearer video reveals Pronger’s stomp

Pronger and Kesler

With poor quality video as evidence, Anaheim Ducks captain Chris Pronger escaped punishment from the National Hockey League after apparently stomping on Vancouver centre Ryan Kesler in a game on Wednesday night.

But a clearer version of the video revealed late Thursday - with a better look at the incident - raises the question of whether or not the star defenceman should face disciplinary action.

While the original game footage showed the incident from a distance as the puck was being cleared out of Anaheim’s zone, the second version zeroes in on Kesler and Pronger as they got tangled along the back boards.

The incident happened in the opening minute of the second period in Anaheim’s zone after a dump in from the blue line by Canucks defenceman Sami Salo.

NYON, Switzerland - German clubs Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen avoided each other in the UEFA Cup quarter-final draw on Friday.

Bayern will play Spanish club Getafe and Leverkusen faces Zenit St. Petersburg of Russia.

There is no chance of an all-German final at the City of Manchester Stadium on May 14, however, because the two could meet in the semifinals.

In the other quarter-finals, Scottish league leader Rangers plays Sporting Lisbon and Fiorentina takes on PSV Eindhoven. The first legs of the quarter-finals are April 3 with return legs on April 10.

LONDON - Arsenal will face Liverpool in the Champions League quarter-finals, while Manchester United will play AS Roma for the third time in two years.

Barcelona, one of the title favourites, managed to avoid all four English teams left in the competition and faces Germany’s Schalke while Chelsea takes on Fenerbahce.

UEFA also made the provisional semifinal draw. The winner of Arsenal and Liverpool meets either Fenerbahce or Chelsea. Schalke or Barcelona faces Roma or Manchester United.

It’s the first time that four teams from the same country have made it to the last eight all hoping to make it to the May 21 final in Moscow.

PHOENIX - Amare Stoudemire had 36 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots and the Phoenix Suns won their third in a row while snapping Golden State’s three-game winning streak Thursday night with a 123-115 victory over the Warriors.

Victoria’s Steve Nash had 21 points - including eight in a row in a big fourth-quarter stretch- and 13 assists. Raja Bell had 18 points, Boris Diaw 16 and Leandro Barbosa 14. Nash and Bell both were 4-of-6 on three-pointers. The Suns made 12-of-24 threes, 7-of-12 in the second half.

Baron Davis scored 38, two shy of his career high, for the Warriors, who lost for only the second time in nine games. Golden State had won three straight against Phoenix.

The Suns improved to 6-6 since Shaquille O’Neal joined their lineup to pull within a game of New Orleans for the No. 5 spot in the Western Conference. Golden State lost for only the second time in nine games to fall 1 1/2 games behind No. 7 Dallas and two games ahead of No. 9 Denver.

Flames blow three goal lead to Thrashers

Pinned

The Canadian Press

3/13/2008 9:59:21 PM

ATLANTA - Bobby Holik scored on a pass from Ilya Kovalchuk in the closing minutes and the Atlanta Thrashers overcame a three-goal deficit Thursday night to beat the Calgary Flames 6-4 for only their second win in 12 games.

Kovalchuk scored into an empty net with 1:01 remaining, completed a hat trick and pushing his goal total to 48 this season.

The loss put a dent in the Flames’ playoff chances. Calgary entered the game in a virtual tie for first place in the Northwest Division, sixth overall in the Western Conference, but several teams were within points of the Flames in a bid for one of eight playoff berths with 11 games left.

The Thrashers, down 3-0 early in the second period, tied it at 4 on a goal by Chris Thorburn at 10:10 of the third period.

Kirk Broadfoot

The Sports Network

3/13/2008 6:17:13 PM

Bremen, Germany (Sports Network) - Brazilian Diego scored in the 58th minute as Werder Bremen defeated Rangers, 1-0, in the UEFA Cup on Thursday but still failed to advance to the quarterfinals.

Rangers won the first leg in Scotland last week, 2-0, and Werder Bremen needed to bounce back from a 6-3 league loss to Stuttgart to join German clubs Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich in the final eight.

Instead, Rangers survived an onslaught from Bremen to make the quarterfinals for the first time with a 2-1 aggregate win.

Sporting Lisbon also advanced to the quarterfinals Thursday, knocking the last of three English teams out of the UEFA Cup with a 1-0 victory over Bolton for a 2-1 aggregate victory.

Crystal at bat overshadows Mussina gem

Lane, Rodriguez and Crystal

The Canadian Press

3/13/2008 5:29:54 PM

TAMPA, Fla. - Mike Mussina threw five perfect innings, but got overshadowed by a batter that struck out in his lone at-bat in the New York Yankees’ 5-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday.

Mussina’s outing didn’t get the biggest ovation from the 10,705 fans at Legends Field. That honour went to actor Billy Crystal, who was in the Yankees’ starting lineup as the leadoff batter and designated hitter. New York gave Crystal, the longtime Yankees" fan who turns 60 Friday, the opportunity to play as a reward for his ambassador-like role for baseball.

"It was unbelievable," Crystal said.

Crystal went down swinging in his only plate appearance in the first against Pirates left-hander Paul Maholm. He waved toward the fans when returning to the dugout.
