Steinsson says Villa is win or bust
by Chris Stanton, 01 April 2008

Gretar Steinsson believes Bolton must beat Aston Villa at Villa Park this Saturday if The Trotters are to retain any hope of Premier League survival.

Gary Megson’s side are now four points adrift of fourth-from-bottom Birmingham after slipping to defeat at home to Arsenal.

Saturday’s defeat may prove telling – The Trotters were 2-0 up and with a man advantage at half time and still contrived to lose the game 3-2 – but Steinsson believes there is still time for Bolton to save themselves.

Kyle Turris signs with Coyotes

The Phoenix Coyotes signed highly touted draft pick Kyle Turris to an entry-level contract on Monday.

Turris, 18, was taken by the Coyotes with the third overall selection in the 2007 draft in June. The six-foot, 170-pound centre just completed his freshman season at the University of Wisconsin, where he led the Badgers with 35 points — including 11 goals — in 36 games.

The native of New Westminster, B.C., was a key member of Canada’s gold medal-winning team at the world junior championship this year, leading the team with eight points in seven games.

“We are very excited to sign Kyle and have him join the Coyotes organization,” said Phoenix GM Don Maloney. “He is a very talented player and is a big part of our future.  By adding him to the roster, we hope to give him valuable experience that will help him heading into next season and beyond.”

Prior to heading to Wisconsin, Turris starred for the Burnaby Express of the Tier II junior-A British Columbia Hockey League. He was named league MVP in 2006-07 after piling up 66 goals and 121 points in 53 games.

The Coyotes now have each of their last three first-round picks under contract, with centres Peter Mueller and Martin Hanzal about to finish their rookie NHL seasons. Mueller — chosen eighth overall in 2006 — has 53 points, while Martin Hanzal — 17th overall in 2005 — has 34 points.

Harry will be a hit out west: Farina

Harry will be a hit out west: Farina

By David Davutovic
April 01, 2008

FORMER Australia coach Frank Farina believes football will take a stranglehold in western Sydney if Socceroos star Harry Kewell was to become the face of a new A-League club.

Kewell, who was born and bred in the blue-collar suburb of Smithfield, has been approached by two consortiums aiming to establish a team by 2010.

Farina said Kewell’s association - albeit at board level - would give the new club, and the sport, a terrific lift.

"Without doubt, Harry’s from the western suburbs of Sydney. When you’re looking at all the sports growing and trying to spread out, it would give the sport a huge boost," Farina said.

"It would be fantastic for someone of his profile and standing in the game to be involved at any level. But particularly talking about grassroots development and youth programs, to put his name to it would be massive.

"The western suburbs of Sydney have not only produced a lot of good players but they’re very passionate people in terms of supporting the game."

Farina knows Sydney’s west intimately, having played and then coached at the Bossley Park-based Marconi in the NSL.

"Harry is very passionate and honest, his word is his bond and that’s always the way he’s been," he said.

Farina, who is conducting a three-day junior coaching clinic in NSW sponsored by Tip-Top, said if Kewell is involved, there is no doubt the junior production line would be a slick operation.

"It would be. If he has his mind set on something he will do it and do it properly. So everything will have to be in place for him to be involved," Farina said.

"He’s living his dream and doing everything he’s talking about. Harry went overseas at 15, he’s come through a very hard school and he knows what it takes to get to the top."

Football Australia chief executive Ben Buckley said he didn’t know of the approaches to Kewell, but was open to the idea.

"If he’s interested, we’d welcome discussions with Harry," Buckley said.

WORLD No. 1 players Roger Federer and Justine Henin advanced at the $8.23 million WTA Tour Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, Henin in straight sets and Federer thanks to an injury retirement.

The Swiss superstar was leading Robin Soderling 6-4 3-0 when the Swedish player retired with a right wrist injury, advancing Federer into a fourth-round match.

Federer, upset by American Mardy Fish at the Indian Wells semi-finals, will face the winner of Israel’s Dudi Sela and Argentina’s Jose Acasuso match.

Australian Open runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was eliminated by fellow Frenchman Julien Benneteau 6-3 6-3 in another third-round match.

Benneteau, ranked 72nd, awaits the winner of a night match between US sixth seed Andy Roddick and Czech qualifier Ivo Minar.

Belgium’s Henin, who won titles at Sydney and Belgium in four starts this year, beat Russia’s Elena Vesnina 6-2 6-2 in her fourth-round match.

This is Henin’s first event after a Dubai quarter-final loss to Italy’s Francesca Schiavone.

Russian third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, the 2006 winner here and a finalist last week at Indian Wells, defeated Israeli 16th seed Shahar Peer 7-6 (7-4) 6-3, to book a quarter-final date with US sixth seed Venus Williams who beat Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 6-3.

Goorjian completes Dragons move

April 01, 2008

SOUTH Dragons have signed Brian Goorjian as coach of the National Basketball League club for the next three seasons.

Goorjian, the most successful coach in NBL history, left Sydney recently after a season of off-court drama revolving around late payment of players and coaching staff.

South Dragons, who finished last on the 2007-2008 NBL ladder, axed coach Shane Heal in mid-season, with Guy Molloy taking over on an interim basis.

Goorjian, who is also the Australia coach, guided the Kings to five grand finals in six years in the Harbour City, and their first three league championships.

Flutie, Clemons headed for Hall of Fame: report

Former Toronto Argonauts teammates Doug Flutie and Michael (Pinball) Clemons will make up two thirds of this year’s Canadian Football Hall of Fame class, according to the Canadian Press.

A CFL source requesting anonymity told CP that Flutie and Clemons will be named for induction Wednesday at the Hall in Hamilton. It wasn’t immediately clear who the third inductee would be.

Flutie and Clemons won Grey Cups together with the Argos in 1996 and 1997, Flutie’s final two seasons in Canada before he finished his playing career in the NFL.

Flutie, who also played for B.C. and Calgary, is perhaps the greatest quarterback in CFL history. He won the league’s outstanding player award an unprecedented six times and led the Stampeders to a Grey Cup title in 1992.

Clemons joined the Argonauts in 1989, becoming a fan favourite with his cheerful personality and ability to electrify crowds as a runner, receiver and kick returner. He set a pro-football record for most career combined yards with 25,396, and won three Grey Cups as a player and another as a head coach. Clemons is currently the Argos’ chief operating officer.
